“Olivier Crouzel transforms and transports landscapes through video projection and site-specific interventions. The artist uses disappearance and traces as the raw materials for a poetic perspective on a changing world. From Île-Grande, located north of Lannion Bay in Brittany in 2025, the artist records conversations with a local resident or sets out to gather observations from an ecologist. He follows the trail of the tides, the movement of seaweed, and the passage of animals. An image freezes a moment, which comes back to life through the subject’s delicate animation, almost like a memory breaking through. The flat surface of the paper then becomes the medium for a film that elevates the setting, in the manner of visual poetry. This rock and the life it harbors are transported to us, to another island in Seine-Saint-Denis. The northern part of L’Île-Saint-Denis is home to a colony of cormorants, which arrive in the fall and winter in the heart of a unique nature reserve. When spring arrives, these large birds depart, heading in particular toward the Breton coast of the English Channel. Some may have landed on this other patch of land surrounded by water before heading back to their wintering grounds, a few kilometers downstream from the Maison Fleuve on the Seine. The physicality of bodies, the fluidity of water, the impassivity of animals, and the temporality of the tides intertwine to invite us to be ‘Au Bord’, that boundary that is both physical and metaphorical.” Ann Stouvenel, director of the Cneai
Au Bord was created for the Festival d’art de l’Estran in 2025 on Île-Grande. As part of the Sillages program, organized by the Réseau Documents d’Artistes, it is currently on view at La Maison Fleuve – Cneai, a new art center on Île-Saint-Denis.
