“Landscape Transhumance” draws inspiration from three forms of movement that traverse the Cantal: geological, energetic, and climatic. The granite outcrops of the Aubrac take millions of years to emerge from the earth, slowly exposed by erosion and the gravitational pull of celestial bodies. Seventy years ago, the flooding of the Cantal dams created new landscapes in just a few years, shifting watersheds, submerged valleys, and reservoir lakes. Today, in the face of global warming, trees are slowly migrating toward cooler areas.

Inspired by the seasonal migrations of livestock, this work draws on these three timeframes to imagine fictional and symbolic displacements of elements from the Cantal landscape: moving the Giou Giou waterfall to the Rézentières washhouse, relocating the large beech tree of Chaylat to a meadow in Saint-Urcize, and transporting a clapas made of granite stones from the Aubrac to the foot of the basalt columns of Saint-Flour.

Through two video installations, a film, and photographs, this work evokes the Earth’s dynamics, its capacity to displace forests, lakes, and mountains, and to generate immense energy, over infinitely long or extremely short periods of time, in order to adapt to human actions.

Work created during a residency in the towns of Saint-Flour, Rézentières, and Saint-Urcize.

FILM: LANDSCAPE TRANSHUMANCE
Film, 6 min.

This film was created using a setup consisting of a video projector and a camera, both installed on the passenger side of a vehicle. As the truck drives along, I project images of the large beech tree at Chaylat, the Giou Giou waterfall, and the granite clapas onto the shoulders of the roads in the Cantal department, traveling from Rézentières to Saint-Urcize via Saint-Flour. Along the way, I stop to take photographs of these layered landscapes.
