Tilos Island, Greece

Abandonment, looting, alteration, dispersion, burial and mineralization. Like Greek temples, vehicles abandoned on the islands become absorbed into the landscapes where they are parked for the last time. What will remain are the cast-aluminum engines, which, like marble columns, will stand the test of time. I photographed a gold-colored Ford Sierra, a Volvo F12 tanker truck, a Mercedes 302 bus with 531380 miles, a Datsun pickup, a yellow bulldozer, a Volkswagen van converted into a chicken coop, a Ford minibus from a vacation village, and a speedboat in the brambles.
I project these images of abandoned vehicles onto the walls of a pumice quarry, imagining them in their raw, substrate state. It is a way of petrifying an era, that of the Anthropocene and oil exploitation, of fixing it within an anthropogenic landscape, a quarry, and of viewing these “Technofossils” as the remnants of a bygone era.
This project began in 2021 on the island of Ikaria with a photograph of a “wall-car.”
